High Grade Seed Potatoes

UK seed potato production begins at SASA (Science and Advice for Scottish Agriculture) where the nuclear stock of over 700 varieties is maintained on behalf of breeders and the industry.  Pathogen free microplants are produced here before being sent to minituber producers for further cutting and multiplication.

Minituber Producers take the microplants from SASA and make further cuttings in a laboratory until they have the desired number of plantlets.  These are then planted out in glasshouses or polytunnels and grown on to produce minitubers.

As High Grade growers the only seed potatoes we bring in are from minituber producers.  These are then planted with a hand fed planter into a field which has no history of growing potatoes.  With lower aphid numbers than the rest of the country, the North East of Scotland is the perfect place to grow early generations of potato seed to try and ensure virus free stocks for further multiplication.

We then multiply the subsequent crop for 2-3 more generations before supplying commercial seed growers throughout the UK for further multiplication.  We strive to produce the best quality product for our customers and we are constantly monitoring our production process to ensure this.

All the seed is stored in refrigerated, positively ventilated stores to keep it in the best possible condition.  It is then dressed, sized and packaged to the customers specification.
